The Yelp Foundation's mission is to support charitable organizations and activities addressing the needs of local communities, including access to information, education, local economic development, and freedom of expression, and to promote a culture of philanthropy among employees of Yelp Inc.

MISSION

About the Yelp Foundation

In 2011 Yelp Inc. established the Yelp Foundation with one percent of company equity to support charitable organizations and activities addressing the needs of local communities, including access to information, education, local economic development, and freedom of expression, and to promote a culture of philanthropy among employees of Yelp Inc. The Foundation accomplishes its charitable goals by making grants to deserving nonprofits throughout the U.S. and matching donations made to charities by Yelp employees up to $1,000 per person per year. The Foundation has given more than $3 million to charity since it was founded in 2011.

By funding the Foundation through a gift of Yelp stock, the impact of the Foundation’s endowment continues to multiply. While it started small, the Foundation now has millions of dollars in assets, which allows it to make substantial grants each year that can create significant impact on local issues Yelp communities are addressing throughout the year.

DONATIONS

Gives Local

In 2015 the Foundation invited locals to support nonprofits that embodied the Foundation’s mission by voting in the Yelp Foundation Gives Local community grant program. Based on votes from locals, three nonprofits in each of 75 markets got a total of $10,000 in grants. With more than 160,000 votes, the program was a resounding success. See all the local nonprofits who received Yelp Foundation Gives Local grants here.

Grant Program

Determining which organizations will receive a grant through the Yelp Foundation’s annual grant program is no small task. To find the right mix of nonprofits that actively embody the Foundation's mission, we call upon Yelp employees to lend a hand. Internal champions who feel strongly about the work of a particular nonprofit present a case to fellow employees at their offices about why that nonprofit should receive a grant from the Yelp Foundation. Based on those presentations, Yelp employees vote on which groups seem most deserving of a grant, and the Board of Directors at the Yelp Foundation considers those votes before making their decision.

The Foundation has made grants in recent years to each of the following nonprofit organizations:

TESTIMONIALS

Community Impact

“Believing in second chances is a nice start, but actually doing something that creates second chances is what matters. The Yelp Foundation is doing this exactly. We are absolutely thrilled and honored to win this grant from the Yelp Foundation!! The Foundation’s partnership and financial backing of Defy is providing life-giving entrepreneurship opportunities to some of America’s biggest underdogs: formerly incarcerated drug dealers and gang leaders who are committed to personal transformation. We’re applying the generous grant to expand our recruiting efforts, which will allow us to serve more Entrepreneurs-in-Training (EITs). In 2014, we’ve served 172 EITs, and with the Foundation’s support, we now have the potential to recruit and serve 500+ EITs next year. We’re excited to “transform their street smarts and hustle” into legal entrepreneurship and reverse generational legacies of incarceration, violence, and poverty. Thank you so much for believing in us.” Catherine Hoke
Founder and CEO, Defy Ventures

“Local First Arizona Foundation is a proud recipient of the 2014 Yelp Foundation grant, which is an absolutely amazing gift that will help us do extensive outreach and programming around our Be a Localist campaign. Our Be a Localist campaign, which is less than a year old, includes exclusive events at locally owned businesses that are curated to create special experiences for both the business owners and customers. When you're a Localist, you get to meet the chef, be the DJ, or tour the show behind the scenes. Localists support our mission, which is to celebrate and support entrepreneurship, which helps build prosperity for communities everywhere. The more local a place is, the more people love it! We are proud to partner with Yelp Foundation to bring more people into a sustainable and Localist lifestyle.” Kimber Lanning
Director, Local First Arizona

“This grant was a critical boost at a time of growth for 826 Valencia. A general operating grant of this magnitude is magical, affording us fiscal flexibility and headway to deepen our work and impact. With the Yelp Foundation’s support, we worked with 4,500 students in the Bay Area and provided 1,700 hours of student programming with the assistance of 500 trained volunteers— all focused on building writing skills, confidence, creativity, and self-expression. In addition, these funds enabled us to launch a brand new after school program at Buena Vista Horace Mann K-8 school, where over 75% of our students made more than a year's growth in reading skills over the course of five months. We are eternally grateful!” Bita Nazarian
Executive Director, 826 Valencia
